Depeche Mode – 1981

What would eventually become Depeche Mode began taking shape in 1979-1980. Initially called Composition of Sound and consisting of Vince Clarke and Andrew Fletcher, the duo was soon joined by Martin Gore. Not long after, the group found their main vocalist and frontman in Davad Gahan. With their name changed to Depeche Mode in the second half of 1980, they had a demo ready to test the waters. In 1981, Daniel Miller’s three-year-old label Mute Records released their first three singles: Dreaming Of Me, New Life, and Just Can’t Get Enough, followed by the debut studio album studio album, Speak & Spell. Earlier that year, the band’s first formal studio recording, Photographic, was included on the compilation Some Bizarre Album. Also in 1981, Sometimes I Wish I Was Dead was released on a flexi-disc.
